I attempted to post this message to TWEETERS yesterday but upon checking the archives I see that it didn't go through so am resending it.
Ever since a Pelagic Cormorant was reported in the Columbia River near Corbett, Multnomah County, and another was seen at Woodland in Cowlitz County I have been checking the cormorant roost on the rock reef just downstream from the mouth of the Sandy River. Yesterday (2-6-06) I finally spotted a PELAGIC CORMORANT fly out of the nearly one hundred cormorants that roost on the rocks and power transmission towers on thereef. I assume that this is the same bird that was seen earlier just a few miles upstream of this communal roost. Unfortunately the vantage point for this reef is on Georgia-Pacific's Lady Island which is closed to the public.
While out on the island I spotted my first of the year Salmonberry (Rubus spectabilis) blooms. For years I have associated the timing of
the return of Rufous Hummingbirds with the flowering of these shrubs, but this is very early for either event.
