In the afternoon (02-09-06) when I drove past the Steigerwald
Lake N.W.R. there was one lone swan in Scaup Lake, which is the small
pond south of the main lake. I thought that it was unusual for there to
be only one of these gregarious birds here so I turned around and went
back to check it out. The bird turned out to be a MUTE SWAN, presumably
the same one seen here on Jan. 13th by Ken Knittle and Ruth and Patrick
Sullivan. I had checked for this bird on a nearly daily basis since it
was first found but without any luck. I called Carol and Don Kohler of
Camas, who were able to come out and see the bird later in the evening.
The best viewing spot to check this pond is from the shoulder of Highway
14 about a quarter of a mile past where the highway crosses Gibbon's
Creek near milepost 18.
I hope every one out there keeps posting sightings to this list
since it seems like the only birds I see lately are ones found earlier by
other birders.
