Next weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count. Despite its name, this
birding event isn't just for backyard birders. In fact, one of our
goals is to receive reports of every species known to be in each state
this winter. Last year, observers reported 196 species in Washington.
Can WA birders set a new record this year? Top 200? Beat Oregon?
Reports from the coast are few and far between, same for Central
Washington. So, whatever you do President's Day weekend, make plans to
see as many birds as you can (good excuse to make that Big Bend trip),
and report them online at www.birdsource.org/gbbc. You can also go to
the website to keep track of how many birds have been seen in the state
at any time during the GBBC, and make plans to chase after any that are
still missing!
