The replies for butterfly sightings came off list so I thought some of you
might like to get a synopsis:

3 people reported butterfly sightings yesterday as expected with the warm
and sunny weather.
2 reported Mourning Cloaks - Nymphalis antiopa,
one reported California Tortoiseshell - Nyphalis californica
and 3 unidentified Nymphalids flying by were reported by those same people
- all within the greater metropolitan Seattle area.
I had no sightings myself, but was only able to spend about 1 1/2 hours in
likely habitat.

I will continue to be interested in reports of early butterfly flights and
any records of what they are feeding on (as specific as possible). I've
been told that rotten snakes are a favorite food of these early flying
nymphalids, but I suspect that is only because one observer saw multiple
nymphalids on one rotting snake. Other carcases should be inspected as
should the poop of carnivores and trees dripping sap. Some flowers may also
be used.
