Noting the E-mail from Meredith Spencer about Snowy Owls on the Waterville
Plateau we left our place in Cle Elum on Saturday and drove to Cashmere where we
picked up our sister-in-law and brother-in-law to look for the owls. We took
U.S. Route 2, then north on 172, west on Slusser Rd, north on F NW. We
starting seeing owls north of Lamoine Rd and stopped seeing them by approximately 12
NW. (Washington Gazetteer page 84) We saw 7 owls total with 5 clearly visible
on the ground and 2 atop wooden power poles. It was a beautiful morning and
they were gorgeous.
Other birds of interest were numerous Horned Larks, a large flock of Snow
Buntings in the middle of the road and four Rough-legged Hawks.
