we may have had the slaty-backed at the cedar river outflow a few minutes
beforehand, but couldn't decide whether or not it was really a very dark
western... it was easily darker than anything else on the water, but we
weren't sure if it were dark enough... about 5pm or so, something spooked
all of the gulls and ducks at the outflow, and only half of them returned.
i'm guessing you saw the half with what may have been the slaty-backed...
:)

distant photo will be posted on the parkgallery website by evening's end. i
hope. :)

Greetings All,

The Staty Backed Gull made it's appearance tonight almost on schedule.
Several birders had gathered on the northernmost pier, the one with the
small roof over the end of it. We went there because that's where most of
the gulls were. After a futile hour of scanning the group, a wave of birds
came in to raise our hopes. No luck!! 10 minutes later a second wave
arrived and we all got on the SBGU almost immediately. The bird flapped
frequently giving us all good looks at the wing markings. The mantle is
ALMOST as dark as the primaries.

Good hunting!

-Rolan
