I want to second Charles' recommendation for taking part in the Great
Backyard Bird Count, February 17-20 (this weekend). I've done it for
several years now, and it's really a blast! I want to emphasize that in
spite of the name "Great Backyard Bird Count", this event is not at all
limited to your backyard. You can do it anywhere, and submit a different
checklist for each area (I do it by zip code) for each day. And it looks
like there's a new competition element, complete with prizes this year.
