The following interesting birds have been reported in Spokane County
during the past week:

3 BLUE JAYS continue to come to feeders at 7th & Smith. They were also
seen farther west at 7th & Stone. For best results be there at 8:00 am &
be prepared to wait a couple hours.

A female BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER has recently been seen several times in
the Dishman Hills Natural Area. To get there take the Argonne Road exit
off the I90 freeway. Go south to Sprague Ave, west a couple blocks to
Sargent Road, left on Sargent to end of road. Park & walk (about a mile
total uphill). Take the main trail, thru the log house, past the display
signs. At one point the trail might appear to Y. If you see this stay to
the right. You will pass a pond on your right (which had a singing WINTER
WREN), then you go thru a small canyon. Up on top the trail comes to a T
with a sign saying East Pond is to the right. Follow the trail to the right
about 440 steps. There is a large Pine Tree barely to the right of the
trail. The tree has been worked over pretty well. Also there is a small
spring to the right of the trail. Of course the bird does wander around.

A VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW was seen at Eloika Lake on Feb 15, which is
probably a record early date. With temperatures headed toward zero this
genetic trait for being early may end.

13 SHORT-EARED OWLS were seen Feb 15 at their usual location at Coulie-
Hite and Thorpe Roads, south of HWY 2 in extreme west Spokane Co.

13 TUNDRA SWANS flew high over Turnbull NWR on Feb 12, for a first report.

1 GOLDEN EAGLE soared over Cheney Feb 12. Golden are hard to find in the
county.

3 wintering WILSON'S SNIPE were at Turnbull HQ of Feb 13 for the first
report of the year.

1 HERMIT THRUSH has been in a Spokane yard all winter for the only report.

The group Spokane year list is up to 109.

A Buttercup was in bloom Feb 14 near Cheney.

Good Birding,

CraigCorder I did not see all these birds.
