Hello All,
Well a first, the U.S.Army Corps of Engineers has signed a finding of No
Significant Impact and Environmental Assessment for its Avian Predation
Deterrent Program. Simply stated this means that The Walla Walla District of
the Corps will be responsible for implementing a piscavor bird reduction
program at all of its dams on the Lower Snake River and Lower Columbia
River. The Corps has opted to operate under Alternative #2 which is the
NON-LETHAL Tools Only. This sounds great save for the fact that USDA
Wildlife Services will be in the mix. The mention of contraceptives, egg
addling and avicides are all referred to in the determination as tools. It
is not currently known how these lethal methods fit into a Preferred
Non-Lethal Tools Only Alternative. For additional info contact the Corps.
This should be interesting to see how this alternative is carried out. I
find it very interesting that the USF&W seems to be cut out of this
determination.
