In regards to Google earth and its marvelous abilities. Once upon a time I
worked for a large software company and I was in a meeting with government
folks regarding computer imaging from satellites. Atmospheric conditions
determine the resolution but one of the examples that was demonstrated was a
Robin sitting in a nest in a yard in New Jersey. This was not a live feed
at that time, but a static photo of a previous live feed taken during a
clear air event in Februrary. So birding by Satellite is certainly possible
if you have the government clearances, and the right atmospheric conditions.
I would be willing to bet somewhere in the NSA is a tech with a bird list
from satellite.
