On this cold but clear mid-winter day (2/18/06),
Garrett MacDonald and I spent a few hours birding in
southern Spokane County. Although birding was
generally slow, we did find several target birds for
the day.

Our first interesting find , was a single BOHEMIAN
WAXWING near the southern terminus of Regal Road.
Farther down the Palouse Hwy, we saw the roosting BARN
OWL that the Woodruffs had previously reported.

Amongst the pile of owl pellets, there was a headless
chickadee. It seems odd that a nocturnal Barn Owl
would kill a diurnal chickadee, but that seems to be
the case.

While searching for a Spokane County Prairie Falcon in
the Spangle area, we saw two ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKs.
Overall, there were precious few birds to see.

Later, we were excited to see a PRAIRIE FALCON fly
across S. Rock Lake Road. However, we realized that
this bird was in Whitman rather than in Spokane
County. When we re-entered Spokane County at Belsby
Road, we were relieved to see another PRAIRIE FALCON
fly off a power pole. This bird was a Spokane County
lifer for Garrett.

Williams Lake contained some CANADA GEESE and nice
drake BARROW'S GOLDENEYE. On our return to the South
Hill, we saw a flock of twenty-five BOHEMIAN WAXWINGs
near the corner of 57th Ave. & Lee.

Garrett picked up a Spokane Co. lifer (Prairie
Falcon), I added three Spokane Co. years birds (Barn
Owl, Prairie Falcon, & Barrow's Goldeneye). Although
my Spokane County Year List trails the Corders' uber
list, it now stands at 65
