Pigeon Guillemots have been sporting their alternate plumage for about three
weeks now, it's nice to see those red feet against black when they dive!

I've also noticed Pelagic Cormorants with white patches.

Standing in line at Colman Dock during the work week I heard what I thought
was a Killdeer and kept looking for it. It sounded as if it were staying in
the same place. I finally realized it was a Eu. Starling mimicking a
Killdeer. Pretty amazing.

Yesterday I visited Anderson Landing Preserve, a small park in Kitsap County
that overlooks Hood Canal if you do the full (short) trail . A couple of
Boy Scouts installed markers, benches, and so forth, and it's a great place
for a woodsy walk. Had the usual woodland species but I swear, every Winter
Wren on Earth was in the preserve that day, the place was crawling with
them! None singing yet, unfortunately. A couple of Bald Eagles were
perched on a snag, bickering back and forth (at least, that's what it
sounded like). A female Hairy Woodpecker was working away on a tree and I
got nice looks at her. From the end of the trail the Olympics look so close
you can touch them.

The preserve has a creek running through it, and stands of alder (?) trees.
I'm thinking it might be a good place for flycatchers and other summer
birds. If any of you Kitsapers visit Anderson Landing Preserve and care to
email me off-list re what you've seen there, please do! I wouldn't call it
a "destination" or "hot spot," just a pleasant place to bird and sit in the
woods.

As I type this I can hear a Dark-eyed Junco singing. B-C Chickadees have
been singing in my West Bremerton neighborhood for a couple of weeks, and I
heard my first Am. Robin song of the year today! Wahoo!!

Finally, Bald Eagles are once again perching on the Turner Joy, a Navy ship
(not sure what kind) near the Bremerton ferry terminal. Always a nice sight
to see in the early AM.

Good birding,
Mary
