Hello All,
MerryLynn and I just returned from witnessing one spectacular event! I
received a phone call from a friend who asked if we had seen the robins
below Bennington Lake Dam? So we went to look for ourselves. WOW! I had
35-48 robins fly in over me from the south every 15 seconds for 45 min.as
they headed into their roost site. I am figuring that there are 12-14,000
Robins pouring into this roost site from all directions. This site is
comprised of Russian Olives, Black Hawthorn, Black Locust and a scattering
of pines and junipers. This thick brushy site is about 200' wide and 2100'
long. There is also a portion of the area to the southwest of the main
brushy area that contained upwards to 6,000 starlings. There are also MODO,
DEJU, SOSP, WCSP, BBMP and RWBB in the roost site. Twice it sounded as if a
large truck were coming up the road, but it was thousands upon thousands of
robins on the wing coming at me at once. MerryLynn watched the west side of
the Bennington Lake area and estimated up to 8,000 robins coming into roost
in the rows of thick Russian Olives. This is the single largest
concentration of robins we have ever seen! What a sight to hear and see.
