I think the virus is more likely being transmitted the
other direction : from domestic fowl to the wild
populations. The pattern of spreading across Europe
seems to CROSS migration patterns, rather than follow
them. It seems more likely that the disease is being
spread by humans transporting their domestic fowl (and
their by-products, ie manure), that then transmit the
disease to wild bird populations.
Of course, THEN the wild population of birds will
carry it that much farther.

I think the virus is much more likely to reach the US
more quickly thru domestic fowl, and/or the pet trade
(legal and otherwise) than thru migrating wild birds.

Regardless, there probably is no stopping it at this
point, anyway.
