FYI - I have received two independent reports of a huge dark mottled
eagle hanging around Dungeness Bay, much bigger than nearby Bald
Eagles.?One report, which I didn't give much credence to, occurred
about a week ago.?The observer said the bird was flying near the mouth
of the Dungeness River, in the vicinity of the Old Dungeness
Schoolhouse.? I thought, "Nyaaah, it couldn't be!" The second report I
recently received from two reputable observers who reported a giant
eagle about 2 - 3 miles out Dungeness Spit on Monday (2/20), sitting on
driftwood like other eagles in the vicinity.

?Both observers stated that the bird was huge, significantly larger
than a Bald Eagle.? I reminded them that immature Bald Eagles
frequently appear bigger than adults due to their longer feathers, but
one of them said that this bird was so much bigger than an immature
Bald Eagle that there was no doubt.? Neither of them saw enough of the
bird to describe distinct field marks, other than to say it is huge,
dark, and mottled.? One did say that the bill appeared dark. Other
than that, they didn't notice other field marks.

?I took a look at Dungeness Bay today, but did not see any eagle out of
the ordinary. If anyone is coming this way, please bone up on your sea
eagles and take a hike out the spit to see what you can find. It may a
wild eagle chase, but who knows?
