That niche view of Anna's versus Rufous Hummingbirds is a good one, it seems to me. Rufous is basically a bird of forest edge and similar types of niche (for nesting), whereas the Anna's is originally a bird of Chaparral (spelling?). For example, the bruhy vegetation along railroad track embankments is Anna's territory. At least that's whhere I saw one in Bellingham one June.
