For the past six years, I've been watching herons from the North Beach
rookery as they roost in the Doug firs visible from our back deck and
fly over our property on nest-building runs. First sightings have been
as early as the second week of February, and I've always sighted a heron
or two by the third week of February. This year, nothing. I've been
concerned that development in the area would drive them away (a couple
of years ago, several houses were very noisily built --while there were
chicks on the nest -- on a block across the street from us that borders
the ravine), and am fearful that this may be the year they don't come
back. Has anyone in the area seen a heron in the North Beach ravine this
year?
