Saw the most amazing bit of hunting prowess a few days ago by the Seward Park eagles. I was on Mercer Island taking an afternoon break from a house project I'm managing. One of the Seward Park eagles was flying low over the water fishing. It would fly slowly until it spotted a fish and then drop into the water, stay there a short while and then fly back up. This went on for about 5 or 10 minutes with no success. At this point this bird was joined by a second eagle who also started fishing - like the first to no avail. After another 5 minutes or so the second eagle must have seen the folly in this endeavor and on one of it's passes it rose up and dropped onto a poor hapless gull that was floating nearby and drove it underwater. The eagle stayed in the water 1, then 2 and on to 3 minutes to the point I was sure the eagle was water logged and on it's way to drowning. Just when I thought all was lost the eagle started to flap it's wings and slowly rose from the water with a very waterlogged and very dead gull which it proceeded to fly over to a nearby tree just out of my site, I'm sure dismemberment and a hardy feast ensued. It was great break-time entertainment that I will not soon forget!
