Tweeters: A very pertinent suggestion by Carol Riddell to record all known
Purple Martin sites along Puget Sound. Let's hope there will be a wide
response....
As far back as 1980 a committee was set up with civilians and Ft. Lewis
personnel to monitor & increase Purple Martins (3 pr.) on the Base's
Johnson Marsh. This is an ongoing success story.
Titlow Beach - Tacoma -first recorded with 2 pair in summer 1976 - and
still active.

Hylebos Waterway - Tacoma's Commencement Bay - recorded with young on
pilings in July 1983. During the 1980s Purple Martins were often seen
nesting on ledges of old & ornate buildings in downtown Tacoma. Since then
a successful nestbox program was started by Todd Tannery, a young man who
died at a much too early age. Also very much involved and keeping his
Purple Martin boxes in good shape is David Adams who lives right there on
the water. This year we have a new team to update and monitor the boxes on
the Hylebos....
