There are a couple of odd hybrids in the area. I saw the same bird to which you refer when we did the Christmas Bird Count the other day. I also saw a male bird that was mostly Mallard colored, but with a white bib, as opposed to the very dark bird you described, but interesting to see both within minutes of each other. There is also at least one domestic goose hybrid hanging out around the Fill amongst all of the Canada and one or two Cacklers in the area.

The bill was wrong.for it have been a female Black Scoter.

Perhaps a domestic variety gone astray?
