Oh I can guarantee that others have more than 12! I don't have a very good view out my window! I was just asking Ed some questions about my new residence that I moved into this weekend (campus housing overlooking Pacific Avenue at the UW) and mentioned it in passing. Who has more than 12 yardbirds in 2006 so far? Surely someone with a feeder or two can beat that!

I did get 38 species at the Montlake Fill today, including a male Northern Pintail that was not seen on the Seattle CBC the other day. A cold, wet day, difficult for birding, but fun none the less. And that is a good number to start my city and state lists with!

Hi all,

The Second 2005 Western Washington YardBirdRace is now history--and it was a great success, with lots of records broken and new records to beat! Results will be posted on the leaderboard, some results perhaps in the Seattle Times & P-I, and in Seattle Audubon's Earthcare, in Washington Birder and on Tweeters if that's ok in a few days.

And this post is to let everyone know there is an ongoing 3rd Annual YardBirdRace--Start watching yesterday!!! No details yet about any possible new rules, possible expansion to the Columbia River, or prizes, and feedback on the YBR is always welcome. And by the way: BRETT WOLFE in Multi-family,U-District Seattle is CURRENTLY LEADING with 12 species!

Entrants new and old are more than welcome to post totals and lists at yardbirdrace at yahoo.com beginning now and as often as desired. Last year's rules are at http://www.ednewbold.com/yardbird.htm

Delia & I will be back in Seattle tomorrow, the leaderboard will be updated then--sorry for the gap at this key moment--We have two Christmas Counts down here near her folks place in the bootheel of New Mexico that we've been doing for over 20 years. It's painfully hot & dry down here (I'm miserable, and I'm not just saying that to be annoying & unpopular in Seattle), there's no snow anywhere and many species are down like Montezuma Quail, Mountain Bluebird & Road Runner but White tailed Kites appear to be moving north, there're a lot of wintering sparrows, Lark Buntings are back, Shrikes at normal levels and one of the overall species counts set a big record at least 141 (Portal AZ).
