Hi Tweeters and friends:
Rainier Audubon did their Kent-Auburn CBC Sunday, Jan 1, 2006 and the
weather was pretty good, although the east winds cut down on some species.
The RAS CBC is in S King County and goes from the salt water at DesMoines to
Redondo, east to Maple Valley, north to Longacres at Tukwila, and south to
Auburn, Algona, & Pacific (barely crossing the Pierce County Line). As with
the TAS CBC (on Dec 17, '05) we had NO PINE SISKINS, AND NO RHINOCERUS
AUKLETS. Our count week SHORT-EARED OWLS refused to fly at dusk at Kent
Ponds, probably because of the winds. Darn it!
But Charlie Wright and his Dad got the Say's Phoebe at Boeing Ponds! It's
been there off and on for a year now, but we didn't have it on a count.
Several of our groups reported ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD on the CBC, more than in
any past years. Our CBC also had 4 W SCRUB JAYS, 3 more than we've ever had
before. Last year we had no Scrubbies. Two WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were
seen in the Green River Valley.
Raptor species included AMERICAN KESTREL, MERLIN, AND PEREGRINE FALCON. We
had N HARRIER in the Green River Valley. Owls included BARN OWL, W
SCREECH-OWL, GRT HRND. OWL, & BARRED OWL.
The prelim Kent-Auburn CBC count was 112 species, which is down from years
past. Reports are still coming in, and we hope to build that number. Last
year we had 126 species.
Yours, Carol Schulz
