The Sullivans have been quietly collecting a few owl pellets up
their way over the past couple weeks. They sent some photos of
what appear to be Sanderling feet in December and a foot that
may be a small grebe foot yesterday.

It's certainly possible that a grebe was caught live, but given
that a Snowy Owl was seen eating a cormorant in Newport, OR and
the beach is often littered with newly dead washups, it would be
a nice addition to the database to unequivocally document scavenging
by owls at. Every hawk that occurs on the coast scavenges. Why
not diurnal(ish) owls?

Please send me any cases where owls are feasting on pre-killed
meals....
