Gene Kridler was correct when he suggested Bowdoin NWR near Malta Montana as
the place my wife and I were blocked by all the avocets. We visited many
refuges in that part of the country that particular summer and they've all
blurred together. Fortunately we keep a journal of all the places we visit
which is helpful for memory challenged folks!
Bowdoin is a great place. So is Benson Lake NWR in western Montana. The
refuges in North Dakota are also fantastic birding places. I couldn't
believe we had whole refuges like Souris in North Dakota to ourselves.
Gene, you mention Charlie Russel NWR - that's where we were almost eaten
alive by mosquitoes along the river bottom.
