Hi Tweeters,

The discussion about preyfish vs alterations in bird
patterns this year has my interest. I like to think
the birds have found someplace else to winter over.

The topic drifted to Common Mergansers. This last
weekend during the Rainier CBC my area included
Southcenter Pond. A large group of male Common
Mergansers were fishing what looked to be young
catfish. The fish needed some work to subdue before
eating and that would attract the attention of the
mergansers without fish. The intensity and length of
chases to steal prey were amazing. Fun to watch.
Some of the mergansers had beautiful pink washes in
their white feathers.

The Hermit Thrush was still around there too. The
best place to park for access is behind Toys R Us or
the Doubletree Inn.
