Yesterday I birded parts of Grays Harbor, Pacific, and Lewis counties in the pouring rain. I spent a lot of time drying out and warming up after getting soaked in a downpour or two, especially along the coastal areas. The White-tailed Kite was present at MP 9 along Lincoln Creek Road west of Centralia (thanks to Marv Breece for the excellent directions). I arrived at the site late in the afternoon and scanned the area for about 30 minutes, and could not locate the bird. I then decided to drive a mile or so in each direction from MP 9 and still had no luck. As the light was beginning to fade a little (it was about 4:00 pm), I was making one last pass near MP 9 and saw a white spot in a distant tree. I immediatley pulled out my binoculars and had ......a Bald Eagle; I then noticed the kite in a deciduous tree right near the eagle. From MP 9 (there is a small turnout) the kite was located in the field just to the southwest. Additional highlights of my trip
were:Glaucous Gull - the individual at the Hoquiam STP was still presentAmerican Kestrel - 4 birds at various locations along Lincoln Creek Road Western Meadowlark - a group of 8 birds at MP 9 Lincoln Creek RoadPeregrine Falcon - Westport area, just west of the intersection of hwy 105 and Montessano StreetRed Phalarope - a few still at the Westport Marina I then went down to Tokeland (but did not spend much time there), had Marbled Godwits.
