In my first year of field teaching I had a kid who was from a family who
were over the top SeaHawks fan. The kid showed up with this interesting sort
of zigzag pattern carved into his haircut, complete with Seahawk blue and
green colors. We were at Blackman Lake and a juv. coot came out from under
the dock and was piping away and very engaging. If you have never seen a juv
coot they have a cool pattern on their head. The kid with the haircut said,
I wonder what he is saying. Without missing a beat I replied, "he's saying
his haircut is cooler than yours."...

I have often wondered about the relationship between coots and ducks. They
seem to keep their own space from each other and I wonder if they compete
with each other.
