Those birds you're hearing are probably your local Killdeer which are often
out at night in all seasons. You can see/hear them in fields, overhead, and
along roads well after dark. I don't know why; maybe someone else does. Lots
of bird species are awake at night. I've heard gulls at 2:00 am and eagles
well before dawn. Violet-green Swallows ( summer of course) start chattering
at 3:00 am long before it gets light.
