Yesterday, as I walked into Marilyn Clark's barber shop at her home (at 639 East Park Avenue in P.A.) across the street from the Olympic N.P. headquarters building, she and Paul Crawford (a retired natural resources specialist at ONP) were looking out the window into her back yard, where they'd just been watching a Scrub Jay. Marilyn said she'd been seeing the bird in her yard lately with the Steller's Jays. While I was getting my haircut a Steller's Jay flew into the yard, but the Scrub Jay did not reappear. Paul was raised along the central coast of California and is well acquainted with Scrub Jays. A call to Bob Boekelheide also revealed that a Scrub Jay was reported recently about 1.5 miles south of this location, in the foothills south of town, off upper Old Mill Road. Other reports in recent years in Clallam County have tended to be east of P.A., around Sequim and in Jefferson County, but Bob said there was also a report not long ago west of P.A., in Joyce.
