I flew a swan survey of the Olympic Peninsula today. Weather finally
broke and we got to do the great circle route around the mountains. Out a
Neah Bay, above the Waatch River, 2 adult bald eagles were flying, chasing
each other then folding wings, falling, catching themselves and flying
higher. One would lead, then the other. I watched for 2-3 minutes as the
aerial ballet ensued going down the river. I was above them in an airplane
and off to one side. It was still going on when I turned off to go another
direction. It was really spectacular.
All the rivers and creeks are up, the lakes and ponds are at flood
stage. Lake Ozette was very high. It was interesting to see the sediment
flows coming down the major rivers, yet many of the forested creeks were
still running mostly clean. The confluence of them could clearly be seen
where clear water met muddy water.
