SNOWY OWLS are still the birds of the week....

SNOWY OWLS in Spokane/Lincoln Co WA...

It's not clear how many birds are in the area, but this is where they've
been seen this past week. Three birds were seen by Ron and Pat Dexter on 14
Jan. The first was 0.5 mile NE of the intersection of Carstens and Wagner
Farm Road. This bird has been in the area about 10 days, using the lone
fencepost out there. Sometimes it sits on top and can just be seen with
binos, but sometimes it sits in the grass near the post so you'll need a
scope. Another bird was on Sprague Road just west of Ladd Road in Spokane
Co. A gray bird was on the windmill near milepost 259 along US 2 just west
of Reardan in Lincoln Co. An adult was on a post near the railroad tracks
0.5 mile NE of the intersection of Mondovi and Sunset Hwy in Lincoln Co.
This bird was in the same location on 16 Jan according to Garrett MacDonald.
On 16 Jan Garrett MacDonald and David Liezen found a bird 0.5 mile south of
Euclid on Ladd Road in Spokane Co. Also on 16 Jan, I found a bird 150 feet
south of US 2 along Carstens Road, right on the county line.

The SNOWY OWL on the Rathdrum Prairie in Kootenai Co ID was seen again on 12
Jan by Roger and Michael Woodruff. It was in the usual haunt. Look for it on
the west side of Greenferry Road, a short distance north of Prairie Road
near Gallop Lane.

Other owls in the news include....

The BARRED OWL found by Dennis Rockwell in Two Rivers County Park, Benton Co
WA was still being seen as of 12. From WA 397, head east on Finley Road for
1.5 mi. Park in the lot at the SE corner of the lagoon in the park. Walk
east on the nature trail; at the first fork stay left and walk another 100
ft. WA DeLorme 39, C-8.

The NORTHERN SAW-WHET OWL first seen 4 Jan at Bennington Lake near Walla
Walla, Walla Walla Co WA by Mike and MerryLynn Denny was still there on 11
Jan. The bird was roosting in the Russian-olives on the upper trail just
north of the parking lot. Also at the lake were BARN OWLS, LONG-EARED OWLS,
and GREAT-HORNED OWLS.

A MEW GULL was at Fernan Park in Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID on 15 Jan
according to Mike Haldeman. To get to the park take the Sherman Ave exit off
I-90 in Coeur d'Alene and go north one block to Theis Road (just past the
Fernan Ranger District office). Turn right onto Theis and go 2 blocks to the
small park and dock.

The WESTERN SCRUB-JAY is still residing in Lapwai, Nez Perce Co ID. This is
a first for the county and northern Idaho. First reported by Angela Sondeaa
around New Year's. Terry Gray provided these directions: heading south on US
95 from Lewiston, continue through Lapwai past the football field, and turn
right on Parade Avenue. Go straight at the 4-way stop and continue 2 blocks
to A Street. Turn left on A and go past the open grassy field to the corner.
The Nez Perce tribe wildlife building is the small white house-check the
feeders in front.

Good birding.
