Hi Tweeters,

I almost missed but after hanging out in the
Independence Rd, Van Dyke Rd and Backman Rd area for
about 2 hours yesterday I saw the Red-shouldered Hawk.
Worth every minute of the drive and wait. What a
gorgeous bird. It could be called the red hawk for
the coloration. New bird for me. 5 species of
raptors in this small area, 3 with prey. Watched an
adult male harrier snag a small rodent. Kestrel with
prey and when I spotted the red-shouldered it was
consuming prey. Red-tailed hawk flew over and a
Cooper's Hawk was roused from the roost by crows and
it started soaring. This put the small birds atwitter
even though the cooper's was just soaring. Just
before seeing the red-shouldered I came across a
calling hawk which turned out to be a Stellar's Jay
imitating a hawk. I have heard and read the
red-shoulders are very vocal but this bird was silent.

Location Delorme P45. Roads Independance Rd, Van Dyke
Rd, and Backman Rd. I saw the hawk off of Backman Rd.
