I am going to Anchorage for only 60 hours (have to sleep, too) and am looking for tips on early Feb. birding spots. I'm expecting a few new birds, to include the Bohemian Waxwing.

I saw a Snowy Owl at Big Ditch on Sunday. Though there was little wind, my scope was jittery. I suspect the soft, soaked, mushy mound of the dike. Handheld digiscoping was not possible that day. The owl stayed on one spot, turning his head one way, then the other. As a small aircraft flew over, he turned he head up, but did not budge.
Best weekend yardbird was a female Townsend's Warbler ground-feeding with the juncos.
