For several years I have used a "Walker Game Ear II" while birding, they look much like the unit in the article. There intended purpose was for use by hunters but the advantage of this model is that it has an adjustable frequency range. I have set mine to the highest frequency range and find that the boost of 40 decibels helps me in hearing the species that were no longer within my hearing range. The unit does shut off if the noise level goes over 80 decibels in order to prevent injury from gun shots etc. I have used the unit while birding in groups where the other people had not experienced the loss of the higher frequencies that I have and heard some birds before they detected them.
There are some negatives to using the Game Ear, the first is that when in a group it sounds like everyone is yelling and simple noises like gravel crunching under your feet and passing cars or airplanes is unbearable. Another downside is that with only one ear being enhanced you do lose the ability to locate the direction from which the sound is coming. Both of these problems are easy to get around, the volume of the unit is easily turned down when in a group or if there is background noise. I remove the earpiece after I have heard a bird in order to locate the direction the sound is coming from.
I will be interested to see if this new device offers any improvements or advantages over the Game Ear.
