Dear Club Supporter,

I am sending this urgent notice to you with a plea for your immediate help.
In Washington, D.C. powerful members of Congress are waging an all-out
attack on one of America's keystone conservation laws -- the Endangered
Species Act.

As you may know, late last year the House of Representatives approved
legislation which would, if it becomes law, eliminate the requirement to
protect 'critical habitat' for endangered species -- delivering a
potentially fatal blow to the recovery of wildlife facing extinction.

We cannot let this happen -- we need your immediate support to help the
Sierra Club and its efforts to maintain a strong Endangered Species Act.





We must stop this in the Senate -- where approval is required before it
becomes law. That's why now that Congress is back in session, we are
focusing our efforts on our allies in the Senate, where pro-wildlife forces
are stronger.

Your urgent donation will help support the Club and its efforts to stop this
bill in the Senate.

For 30 years, the Endangered Species Act has safeguarded America's wildlife
from extinction. In fact, the Act has a 99% success rate in preventing
animals from going extinct. Hundreds of species have been saved, and the
loss of this legislation would put animals like the Florida panther, bald
eagle, gray wolf and grizzly bear in grave danger.

But now anti-environmental forces in Congress -- headed by House Resources
Committee Chairman Richard Pombo (R-CA) -- are pulling out all the stops to
undermine this critical protection for America's wildlife.

So please also sign the petition to Senator Lincoln Chafee (R-RI), Chairman
of the Fisheries, Wildlife and Water Subcommittee, telling him that you
support protection for endangered species. Your signed petition, when
combined with those of other concerned Americans, will demonstrate
widespread support for maintaining a strong Endangered Species Act.

We need to protect more wildlife habitat, not weaken the Endangered Species
Act. Rather than rewriting the Endangered Species Act, Congress should be
finding ways to set aside more land for wildlife habitat and establishing
new National Wildlife Refuges to provide habitat for species like the
grizzly bear, salmon, sage grouse and jaguar.

Please send a much needed donation today -- this cynical and destructive
legislation has already moved to the Senate and we must be able to fight it
with everything we've got...your donation will help the Sierra Club and its
efforts to fight this bill in the Senate, as well as our other critical
efforts to protect our wildlands, air, water and wildlife.
