I saw an interesting bird today. When I first saw it, it was walking south
by the ditch on the east side of North Bay Park (Ocean Shores). It then
flew to the east parking area of North Bay Park and when it was spooked by
a car, it flew to the west parking area of the park where it rested on the
pavement for a few minutes. Then it flew north over Duck Lake. It was a
sandpiper of some kind. I am not an expert at bird identification, but I
have been looking at all the pictures in the guides. It looked most like
the pictures of the Upland Sandpiper. The bill and the legs were light
colored, though I would say they were tannish or pinkish, not yellow. The
tip of the bill was very prominently black. The tail was long and dark and
wing tips were dark as well. I hope any birders who might be the area will
keep the eyes open for it. Betty Smith (Ocean Shores)
