Each spring and summer I spend considerable hours scoping leg bands
at a Purple Martin colony on the north end of Camano Island . A
nearby eagle nest has been active just about every year for the past
five years, so when the martin activity lulls, I scope the eagles
and their young. Often adults returning with food come in flying low
over the water, then rise up over the beach and perch on a snag,
before making a final short hop to the nest. While on the snag,
their prey is often observable, fish on a few occasions, but the
majority of food delivered to the young [that I have observed] have
been birds of one kind or another, and the ones I could identify
were ducks.
