Hello, Tweets

What sad news to hear. The Puget Sound birding community and the
purple martins Kevin spent so many hours in bringing back to a
presence in western Washington will all miss his hard work and quiet,
pleasant personality.

I met Kevin years ago shortly after my uncle who was involved with
bluebirds gave me some gourds. Kevin came out to my house to get the
gourds and they are now, hopefully, home to some of his many martins.
He was so sincere and involved and spread the word at the Woodland
Park Zoo's "Festival for the Birds" the past couple years. Many
people learned of this lovely bird through Kevin's involvement.

When I returned home to Seattle in 1981, martins were a rarity. Now,
thanks to Kevin's efforts, I can drive a few miles to Log Boom Park
and watch adults twittering and zooming around the gourds off the end
of the pier while the young wait for their return and food. Ann van
der Geld and I were to help with censusing these gourds this coming
season, so I hope others can take over Kevin's good work.

He will be missed.

Cheers, Diann
