I once saw an immature Red-tailed Hawk feeding on a road killed deer near
Colville Washington. Twice I've seen adult RTHA on salmon carcasses but then
again it might be easier to list birds that don't take advantage of salmon
protein when it is abundant ( We found Golden-crowned Kinglets feeding on a
20-25lb Chinook on a gravel bar on the Skagit River). Perhaps someone else
can supply statistics concerning the percentage of carrion in hawk diets. I
would guess it's fairly low.
