Keeping The Sound Alive Speakers Series

Birds on Ice: Arctic seabirds and global warming

Presented by Dr. George Divoky, Institute of Arctic Biology, University of
Alaska

March 2, 7-9 PM at REI Flagship Store, Seattle

Sponsored by People For Puget Sound

Over the last 30 years, Dr. George Divoky has studied how global warming
has caused major changes in the Arctic pack ice and adjacent nearshore
waters and its effect on seabird populations on Cooper Island; most
recently the adaptive responses of the Black Guillemot. He also has
up-to-date information about the invasion of the subarctic Horned Puffin.
Dr. Divoky shares his Arctic research and findings and how what he is
learned in the Arctic could be applied to climate changes in Puget Sound.

Dr. George Divoky is Research Associate at the Institute of Arctic Biology,
University of Alaska Fairbanks. He is also the current Director of Friends
of Cooper Island, a nonprofit organization continuing the three-decade
study of seabirds on Cooper Island and their response to rapid climate
change in the Arctic. His research has been featured in the New York Times
Magazine, in a PBS television series, and on the Late Show with David
Letterman.
