Hello Everyone-

This morning I led a class field trip to observe hummingbirds at
Discovery Park. We hit the jackpot- at the NW corner of the south
meadow, there is a large patch of flowering Snowberry, Fireweed and
Honeysuckle. We saw at least 20 hummingbirds here, including many
female-plumaged Rufous and Anna's Hummingbirds. It's a great opportunity
to practice aging both species and to see young males practice their
dive displays (with much quieter accompanying wing sounds, if any at
all). We did not see any adult male Rufous (not surprising since they're
showing up in SE Arizona already) and just 1 or 2 adult male Anna's.

Also of note was a nesting Tree Swallow at the gourds just NE of the
large military housing complex or just north of the historic district.
There are two poles with several gourds attached, and it was occupying
the more westerly pole. Also many Band-tailed Pigeons were present at
various locations in the park.
