Yesterday my next door neighbor at our cabin on
Treasure Island (off Grapeview near Allyn)
called me over to show me some chicks that his
lawn mower had flushed. They were just a few
days old. 10 feet away was an adult Mountain
Quail, clearly disturbed. At 4 AM today I heard
repeated calls: a standard, single call note of
the adult Mountain Quail, followed by a ?covey?
call. This went on for at least 10 minutes,
sounding like an old phonograph record stuck on
one track. The adults have been coming to an
ornamental pool and a nearby feeder for the last few months.

There had been Calif. Quail on the island a few
decades ago but they died out. Since Treasure
Island is a residential retirement / summer home
island, these Mountain Quail more likely moved in
from the mainland rather than were introduced.
