July 11, 2006. Spokane County Birding is picking up as adult shorebirds
have started their migration south.

New for the year, an adult SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPER was at the Peone Prairie
Wetland on July 8. It was with an adult WESTERN SANDPIPER. They were not
seen the next day.

Also new for the year, a male BLUE "Dusky" GROUSE was on Mt Spokane at the
Knob Hill campground on July 8. The group year list is now 226. Check out
the progress at http://www.spokaneaudubon.org/

Perhaps the best bird was a young LINCOLN'S SPARROW banded near the Little
Spokane River. It was young enough to suggest local nesting. Please let me
know of any historical nesting of Lincoln's Sparrows in Spokane County.

Backpackers in Mt Spokane State Park June 30 & July 1 saw one BARRED OWL &
heard at least one more in separate areas on the trail to Quartz Mountain.
These owls did not respond to tapes of mating calls & gave only a loud
"whoo" call. Other trails produced 2 GRAY JAYS, FOX SPARROWS & OLIVE-SIDED
FLYCATCHER.

A male AMERICAN REDSTART was near Holcomb Rd and the creek June 30. This is
along the road to Mt Spokane.

A SWAINSON'S HAWK was near William's Lake July 5.

A south migrant male RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD was near Cheney July 3.

Good Birding,
