Hi, I saw a Bald Eagle chase a Great Blue Heron in July eight years ago when I turned onto a wooded street one block away from the bay (Grays Harbor). I heard crashing and smashing above me as the heron dived straight down toward the ground through the branches of alders, and right on its tail the eagle. The heron veered upward at a slant just before it hit the ground nearby where I stood, and landed on a sturdy branch just above my height a few yards to my right. Meanwhile, overhead at the top of taller firs and hemlocks, a few crows had become a few hundred crows, all screeching in top voices as they stared down at the eagle and the heron. The eagle stared at the heron, and perhaps saw me, then lifted off, up through the tight black ranks of the screechers, and flew ever higher, in slow spirals, until the last harraassing crows gave up. The heron, though, remained on the branch, feathers messed and a few hanging, and it seemed dazed. It was still there, alone, when I returned on the loop road twenty minutes later.

(This was the same quiet road where, a few weeks earlier, I had come to pick blackberries only to find a black bear heading toward the same patch. Now, darn it, three lots are being cleared for houses.)

Hello,
I was wondering if it is common to see a Bald Eagle attack a Great Blue Heron? On July 2 we had a neighborhood small wooden sailboat race. this was located in the backwaters of Mitchell Bay on San Juan Island outside of Friday Harbor. We were all amazed to see an Eagle attack a Heron which by this time was swimming(!) in the middle of the racing boats (about 20). The Eagle dove repeatedly at the Heron which was now swimming and looking dazed in the middle of our small sailboat race. The Eagle attacked until the wounded bleeding bird flopped into one of the boats. Then it flopped back out of the tiny boat and we couldn't see what happened after that as we spectators were on shore.
I have never seen a Heron swim or a Bald Eagle attack a Blue Heron. While kiacking out side Snug Harbor, I have seen several different evenings a Bald Eagle do fake dives at an Canada Goose that honks at it as it swims alone in the sea.
Are any of these behaviors common? Herons swimming, Canada Goose alone in the sea night after night, Bald Eagles attacking them, both full grown...
I'm new here, maybe all this is common place?
Tess
