This year GBH established a second nest in the same tall cottonwood behind
our house and above Thornton Creek near its mouth at Lake Washington in
North Seattle. The first nest was established last year and two young
herons were raised there. First hearing, and then watching them as they
learned to fly was fascinating.
This year, there are babies in both nests--big babies making a ruckus even
in the middle of the night.
About 6 weeks ago my wife and I twice noticed a bald eagle perched about 8
feet above the upper nest. It was brought to our attention by the alarmed
squawks of the parents. The eagle just sat there while the herons flapped
and made noise while perched nearby. Neither time we witnessed this
behavior did we see the eagle get into the nest. Both times it was driven
off--not by the herons--but by a dozen crows.
