addendum to my Rainy Pass remarks:

Since that woodpecker (Aug '85) was merely a Hairy, and not a Three-toed, I didn't bother to scribble much in the way of notes. But after reading about the subspecies converging in the general area, and seeing related comments in Wahl's "Birds of Washington", I'm wondering if that Hairy Woodpecker could've been the "Septentrionalis" race from the north, instead of "Orius." There was something about its whitness that bothers me. Maybe it had conspicuous white wing spots? And it was high in the subalpine zone.
