Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge, July 20, 2006

Thursday was a beautiful morning for birding at the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. We walked our short route which is to McAllister Creek then back to the twin barns, and on to the ring dike and return along the riverside of the boardwalk. We do the full loop of the refuge on the first Thursday of the month.

Highlights included a very busy female yellow warbler feeding a juvenile brown-headed cowbird; the juvenile bald eagle sitting on a branch near the nest and exercising its wings; two osprey; an American bittern gliding quietly past us and landing to give us a great view; and a red-breasted sapsucker working a dead snag just off the boardwalk. Shorebird highlights included two spotted sandpipers and a Wilson's snipe. Total species: 37
