Hi Tweeters,

My son Deyland and I went to the burn near the Elk Heights exit off of I-90 today. We located the adult female Black-backed Woodpecker fairly far up the hill, quietly tapping away (I heard her first but Deyland spotted her first). Besides the wonderful woodpecker, we spotted 4 Western Tanagers, including a mom being followed and pestered by two young ones, a very brief and distant view of 3 swifts (they appeared to be Vaux's, but I can't be certain), and a nice close-up of a Turkey Vulture. While watching the woodpecker, we were joined by a couple of birders from Redmond. We also got a very close-up view of a Common Nighthawk at the Iron Horse State Park parking lot, which was a lifer for Deyland.

Good birding,
