I had a very close look at a No. Pygmy Owl on the forest trail at Green River Community College today. I have had a number of sightings in the past here. Perhaps it is the same bird or this is a good place for them. I found this one because it was being mobbed by Chickadees, I heard the twittering. Both Black-capped and Chestnut-backed Chickadees were together along with two Bewick's wrens, two Brown Creepers and a small Vireo.....Hutton's I think. The last Pygmy Owl I saw was back in spring of 05, that mobbing included Stellers Jays and Rufous Hummingbirds. These two sightings occurred in the same spot on the trail, that is close to what we call the overlook. This looks out over Soos Creek and Hwy 18, it has a bench and a very nice view of Mt. Rainier. It is also a great bird viewing spot. Come to GRCC and take a look....in any case you will get a nice walk. Lots of trails, and you can go all the way down the hill to the Green River. I don't think any other local Community
College has anything like it.
