Greetings, all,

A friend and I made a trip in the heat to Wenas Creek Monday-Tuesday
(July 24-25), by way of Elk Heights.

Although we visited in the heat of early afternoon, the burn near I-90's
exit 93 (Elk Heights) was busy, including 2-4 HAIRY WOODPECKERS (single
adults with single flighted juveniles) and 3-5 BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKERS.
These included an adult male with a flighted juvenile with yellow on
its head and an adult female with a (probably different) flighted
juvenile.

The Wenas Creek area was hot and dry, and there was a lot less bird
activity and song than in spring, but there was water in the creeks, and
we did see some of the area's specialties, including COMMON POORWILL (as
we walked a road at dusk), LEWIS'S WOODPECKERS (along Umtanum Road), 4-8
WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKERS, and PYGMY and WHITE-BREASTED NUTHATCHES. The
one species still singing at spring-like levels was WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE.

Cheers,

Alan Grenon
